Evening happenings......

So the day finally ended and I prepare to leave. I usually try to wait until my supervisor leaves just for GP, it looks good. Naw I aint doing jack, but it still looks good. At any rate 6:20 comes and I'm like time to jet. I pack up and make my way to the restroom then elevator. I proceed to walk to the metro station as normal. Only to get down the escalators to realize.........I drove. So I walks back to the building and catches the elevator downstairs to get my car. And so my weekend begins.

Well I have a final exam Sunday, so no real plans other than study til it's time for me to leave for the exam. But I'm thinking, since I'll be in the house all day tomorrow, might as well grab some snacks. So I head to the Giant in Largo. Damn near there, I'm like naw I'll just hit the GNC for some hair oil and then hit the Shoppers.

I go into Shoppers with sunflower seeds and popcorn on my mind and I wind up spending 22.78. It never fails, I go into the grocery store for one thing and leave with that one thing and two or three bags of other things. And this time they didn't even have the sunflower seeds I wanted.

So now I'm home, having had a salad, I'm allowing my pre-poo (shampoo) concoction to sit in my hair til hubby gets home to clean the sink for me to wash my hair. And he needs to get here soon, cause my movie starts in 4 minutes. Yep, I'm finally gonna see Three Can Play That Game.

Have a great evening.

A full stomach

oh what a good dinner I just had. And what did I have might you ask? Well let me tell you.....I had some crab balls and mashed potatoes. Now to others that might not seem like much of a meal, but for me......as the title stated, I have a full stomach.

But as an after thought I begin to think about an article I read on The Savvy Sista site about African American women and obesity. Based on the brief article 78% of black adults are overweight. I wouldn't consider myself obese more like a little healthy. But while researchers are studying Americans, why are they not studying the food and finding ways to produce food that is healthier. Personally, I think there are too many fingers pointing at the issue and not enough fingers pointing at solutions. Sure Americans could eat better, but the cost of the healthy food is much more expensive.

But I will admit that I'm not too big on exercising and I do prefer the quick unhealthy meals over meals that are healthier but take time to prepare. And I am trying to change my unhealthy eating habits and incorporating exercise into my weekly schedule.

Thursday Thirteen - 4th edition

This edition is an ode to and for black shoes. My husband doesn't see the purpose of having more than three pairs of black shoes. Of course I beg to differ, there's the wedge, at least two types of loafers, varying textures and not too mention the heel height and style. At any rate as the summer begins to wind down, I'm forced to think about the fall and subsequently my work wardrobe. One of the few things I like about the fall/winter are the shoes. So I decided to have fun and present 13 pairs of black shoes for any career minded woman. Now of course not every woman would agree with my choices, so in the choices I present today I tried to stay on a middle ground, no real high heels and nothing too fancy. But as you'll see all of these black shoes are very different.

With out further ado:

now this shoe is cute to keep in the office when you are forced to do some walking and don't want to compromise too much style.

and this one is a nice basic black patent to accompany a black suit, it sorta breaks up all the black with it's shine.
this is a nice option for skirt suits.

next up is the classic mary jane shoe.......I really like this one because it is very stylish and not overly decorative and very sleek.

here's another black flat that's good for those that do alot of driving, but it's still very stylish and yeah it's different from the first shoe in that this shoe is adorned with a chain like decor versus the buckled used in the first shoe.

this is a nice shoe to wear with an A line skirt or a skirt suit long or short

this is one of two types of loafers, this is the plain loafer, modern sleek and would look nice with a pant suit

these textured loafer can be nicely pair with a plain suit to offer a hint of variety

this is nice option if you are wearing career separates, again very stylish

there is a difference between these twoboth are wedges with different stitching for the details, but still stylish

some company's allow employees to dress down on Friday's where jeans can be worn. These are nice booties that would pair nicely with some jeans and a top. Another option for jean Friday's, as I call it is:

So there you have it, 13 different pairs of black shoes for any career minded woman. Now pardon me while I go place my online order.........

Floral arrangements

I wanted to make some arrangements for my grandmother's memorial service. There were so many pre-made arrangements available in the store. But they were abit costly as well. Not too mention I wanted pour some love in to works created with my grandmother in mind. II found nice pre-arranged bushes and two floral containers on clearance. So I made my purchase and sat down Saturday to put in the work.

This is the first one I did, it is my favorite.

The next three required another trip to the store. And I surprised even myself with what the next two:

And the last one was just ok:

Overall, I enjoyed what I did and the end results. I showed the pictures to a few family members that liked them. And I'm sure my grandmother would appreciate the effort I put forth. I also ordered a sympathy arrangement from all the grand children to be delivered Wednesday morning.

He aint know.....

Every few semesters or so I get an e-mail from my current advisor letting me know they are leaving and that my new advisor will be in contact. Well I'm roughly 4-5 classes shy of completing my undergraduate studies. And as such I want my hand held in selecting the remaining courses in fulfilling the requirements. The reason is two fold:

1. Although my curriculum will not change, the courses offered do. Let me break it down, I started in 2002, so that year's curriculum is what I will follow until I finish. With each new year new curriculum are set for the incoming students, and as such I've found that courses are drop and new ones are added. I don't want to waste me time tracking down what classes aren't being offered now and what the equivalent class is.

2. I pay too much money and basically that's what the advisers are for. EARN YOUR KEEP.

So when I got the e-mail last week from my new advisor, I kindly sent an e-mail requesting he review my transcript and help me select my last few courses. Well today I got a response back telling me to go to my student portal and the information provided there would aid in my selecting the remaining courses.

Me being me, I was abit taken aback. So I politely, naw nix that, I rattled off an e-mail stating that I was looking for a more personably assistance and that I had visited the student portal and didn't find the information useful, (it's a lie but what the hay, right) and that I'd contact another advisor for the assistance he was unwilling to provide.

Guess what...............an hour later the phone rings.........

Me: Hello

Advisor: Can I speak with Ms. Crythenlive

Me: Can I tell her who's calling? (I didn't recoginze the number)

Advisor: This is advisor from UMUC

Me: This is she

Advisor: Ms. Crythenlive, I was calling to apologize if my response to your e-mail seemed as if I was brushing you off. But I wasn't sure if you knew about the student portal and I've always advised students to visit and utilize the information there in selecting courses.

Me: Ok?

Advisor: So you are looking for guidance in selecting your remaining courses for completion?

Me: Yeah? (that's what the e-mail said)

Advisor: Ok, so what I'll do is take a look at your records and then I'll send you an e-mail with the remaining requirements and what courses you can take to fulfill those requirements.

Me: ok, thanks.

Advisor: Do you accept my apology?

Me: Sure, and thanks for your help.

While I didn't expect a response, I was glad he felt obligated to call and make amends. You see I don't believe we should settle for subpar services. No one benefits from it all. Say for instance, my mother and stepfather ordered take out from Outback a few weeks back. Well by the time my stepfather got home with the bags, they noticed they didn't get all of their order and the wings he ordered were over cooked. But he decided not to call and complain. I myself don't see it as complaining, but merely bringing inadequacies (big word, whoa my head hurts now) to the attention of someone that aims to provide great customer service. (now that sounded like a dang on customer service commerical) How would I have handled it? I'd would have politely called back to the establishment and kidnly spoken with the manager on duty and let them know. Now, my parents won't go back to Outback because of that poor transaction and Outback loses out on the potential sales from my parents.

Fresh Tears

I received a few inquiries yesterday concerning my grandmother. So I thought today will be cool, no one to remind me of my loss. I'm at work because I need the distraction. Well another co-worker came in this morning and inquired. She said her intentions were to inquire yesterday, but of course we are at work so it's understood. Nevertheless, I informed her my grandmother passed Monday. I go on to say that my grandmother had been in the hospital for about 18 months so the family finds a little comfort in knowing she's at peace now. Well she informed me her aunt had passed and Monday was the day of the service. We chit chat for a few more, all the while I hold my composure. But when she left........a fresh round of tears begin.

So I sit here and write/type this thru blurred vision, and hoping I can make it thru the day without a full blown out crying session.

17:02

17:02 this fourth day of August 2008, my grandmother took her last breath.

I got a call from my oldest brother yesterday saying my father planned to take my grandmother off life support today. He said he'd more than likely be there as well. I wasn't sure if that's what I wanted to do. But I felt the need to be there for my father. So I declared to Mister that I was not going in.

I called my supervisor and after about 8 calls, I finally got ahold of him to let him know I wouldn't be in and why. So that's how my day started. My brother said 12 noon was the time it would all go down. I arrived at the hospice at 11:25. I sat outside to get myself together so I wouldn't get overly emotional. I finally sucked it up and go inside. I get to the front desk, as I wasn't sure the room number. Well low and behold, ya girl was in the wrong dang on place. So I calls up my stepmother and get directions to hospital.

Upon arrival at the hospital I walked past the room and had to come back....can we say reading is fundamental......at any rate I get in the room and three of my other cousins were there along with my grandmother's sister. My father arrived about 30 minutes later with my half brother in tow. Next came four more cousins, yeah we were deep for a few. Stepmother showed up shortly after. And then it was time, the respirator specialist and nurse came in to remove the apparatus from my grandmother and administer her the oxygen she needed. And then she was breathing again on her own. It was ruff at first sight, so I wont go into details. We sat around and watched and chatted then watched some more. Then four cousins left followed shortly by my grandmother's sister and another cousin, leaving six of us there.

Three hours later the nurses came in to change her bandages and bed sheets. We took that as a good time to go grab some snacks from the gift shop. When we got back to the room, my father left to go grab some items from storage. One cousin went to hold my grandmother's hand, and moments later observed that her breathing had ceased. I called in the nurse who informed us, she was still breathing. At this point the three of us surrounded her hoping she felt our presence.

17:02 this fourth day of August 2008, my grandmother took her last breath.

I thank GOD she was not alone and her transition wasn't drawn out.
I praise GOD because I am certain she's with him in his kingdom.

Witness Protection

Today, I watched a good movie entitled "Family in Hiding". It was about this woman that witnessed the murder of a district attorney. She goes forth and identifies the man that committed the murder. The accused has committed a host of crimes for which the police has been after him for a long time. There were several other witness who've all recanted their testimony once in court. So the authorities were more than happy when this new witness came forward and agreed to testify for which they'd offer her a spot in the witness protection program. She has two high school kids, a boy that's a basketball player and a girl that has a boyfriend she can't seem to live without. And there in lies the problem.

Their first relocation was to Seattle, but that was botched when the girl called the boyfriend. She told him she couldn't' reveal her exact location, but get this.........wait for it........she gave him the phone number to the payphone she was calling from and told him he could call her there the next day at 4pm. Of course the bad guys ransacked their previous home and found out about the boyfriend and tap his phone, and thanks to girl they knew where to find her.

Massachusetts was their second location of which the boy was responsible for them being found by the bad guys. He was told he couldn't play basketball anymore because it would put them in the spot light. But what does he do, he joins the basketball team and has his picture plastered on the front page of the local newspaper.

In both instances I didn't help the family that there was a corrupt FBI agent working for the bad guy. So the bad guy was able to locate the family while in Seattle in time to be there when the boyfriend was due to call the next day. And then the day after the boy was in the newspaper, the bad guys were at the school. In the end the FBI tapped their own phones and traced calls that had been made to see what calls who was responsible for the leaks.

USA network has a show that centers around witness protection. The show is entitled "In Plain Sight". I've seen a few of the episodes and found the show interesting. The show details the process establishing new identities for the person and family. It also shows the beginning phases of those being relocated to a new city.

Would you go forth and admit to witnessing a crime? Would you agree to get in a witness protection program?

Weekend recap

The weekend is almost over and for the most part I was in the house yet again. I was supposed to go to happy hour with a buddy Friday. But said friend had a hedache when they got off work. They said they'd take some aspirin and lay down for a few, well 11:20 I text saying "I just woke up". By that time the homebody in me was not willing to move. So I was in the house for the night. Mister and I watched a movie and that was it.

Saturday I was awaken by another friend that had just heard about my co-worker that had passed. I told her I'd call her when I got up, but couldn't get back to sleep. I lounged in bed for an hour or so longer. Then it was time to get ready to attend the funeral. It wasn't overly sad, which was really nice and the minister was good. I got to see some former co-workers and that was good as well, sorta like a mini reunion.

At any rate, I headed on home about 1:15 expecting to hear from my father or a family member. But the phone didn't ring, so I sat in the house. Mister came home and said he'd be going out later and asked what was I gonna do that evening. I told him if he was going out, then so would I. So I texted the friend that was supposed to go out friday night and we made plans to meet. We decided to hit the Jasper's in Crofton. It was a cool spot, not too overly croweded but a nice crowd and chill atmosphere.

So today, I hate to admit.......I didn't feel like doing jack! Mister called and asked what I was up to and called me a slaker amongst other things for not doing anything productive. He agreed to run two of my errands for me, so that was cool. I gathered the strength to get dressed to run the other few errands I wanted to run. Well guess what......I ironed my clothes but that was it. Mister has been home and has gone back out the watch the game and still here I sit.

I have homework that's due, and it would be nice for me to get my clothes ready for the week. But I'll let you know tomorrow how I make out.

Hope you are enjoying your weekend.

This work week is over

So the work day is just about over. I’m supposed to be going to happy hour tonight. And then tomorrow, I want to hit the track early. I have a funeral to attend at 11 am. My father and stepmother should be back in town by then and I’ll probably catch up with them. I don’t have any plans for Sunday.

I didn't read

This morning on my train ride into work, I didn't read my book. Why, you might ask. Well I was partially consumed with both grief and guilt. You see yesterday I got an e-mail from my cousin in California. In the email she mentions hearing about Ma (my paternal grandmother), calling her brother over so that they could break the news to their mother together and lastly making travel arrangements to get here (DC).

Imagine, if you can, my shock and the gamut of emotions they I immediately began to feel. But I was at work, so I had to hold it together. I waited until I got home to start making the calls to get the complete information. I call my father's cell, no answer, I call the two houses and again no answer. So I call my youngest brother to ask him if he'd spoken with "Daddy" to which he replied not in a minute, and that my father was out of town. So he asks why and what was up, so I tells him I got an e-mail from our cousin and that it alluded to Ma passing on. I go on to say I wasn't sure if this was true but I was going to call our aunt to confirm.

So I calls my aunt and she gives me the update. My father and stepmother left a last week for a trip to Jamaica and sometime after my grandmother slipped into a comma. And she's currently on life support. The family is awaiting my father return before any steps can be taken. He has the power of attorney for my grandmother. My aunt was abit disturbed by this because she knows my grandmother's wish was not to be kept alive if on life support. She goes on to say that a an x-ray was taken of my grandmother's brain, and there was no activity.

I could have read my book, in fact I should have read my book on my train ride into work. I could have used the distraction. But you see the guilt I feel wouldn't allow me to use the distraction. The guilt from living in the same area as my grandmother all these years but rarely making a visit. The guilt of chasing my own life aspirations without keeping in touch with my grandmother. And I'll also admit that I feel guilty because I don't feel as if I deserve the right to shed tears or grieve for my grandmother because I didn't visit and keep in touch.

And as I sat on the train for the 35 minutes it takes to get me to work, I allowed the guilt to beat me up in order to justify the tears that have fallen and will continue to fall. And as I resume my day to day activities I'll slowly begin to grieve for my grandmother as she begins her transition.

Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted
Matthew 5:4

Anniversary trip

Mister and I will celebrate our third wedding anniversary in November. We have yet to make solid plans. Prior to our Florida trip we briefly discussed it. I suggested that we wait until August then begin the research. I said he should choose three places he wants to go and do the pricing and I will do the same. And then we’d sit down and discuss our findings and make a decision.

So I’m beginning my research now. I prefer to over prepare for our discussion. I already know his sights are set for Costa Rica. It’s on my list of places I’d like to visit, however there are a few other places we might be able to get to before Cost Rica, i. e. Mexico or the Bahamas. Money is definitely a huge factor in where we go and he’s already stated how much he’s willing to spend. Unbeknownst to him, I plan to add to it to ensure we get a better bang for our buck. So for instance, he usually looks for Monday through Friday; well I’d be willing to shell out the extra to make it a Sunday through Sunday. And then our preference is all inclusive resorts. Of course there are conditions on that as well; i. e. the resort has to have at least 4 dining options as well as a host of activities onsite. We don’t mind doing the various excursions, but sometimes the weather. Say for instance our trip to Jamaica last year, it rained briefly the first two days we were there. So we didn’t make plans for any excursions. But the resort has activities that got us out of the room.

My three choices are: Cancun or Puerto Vuellta, Bahamas or Barbados. From prior research we gathered there aren’t any or many “all inclusive” options for Barbados. So we’d have to count on an additional expense each day to eat. Mexico offers the largest selection of resorts that are all inclusive.

I’ll do a post soon with at least two hotel options for each destination.

Well I’m off go to begin my research……

Thursday's Thirteen - 2nd edition

I will be the topic of this week's Thursday Thirteen. I'll reveal 13 things about myself. Without further ado:

1. I was born and raised in Washington DC. I moved to the suburbs of MD my freshman year of high school. I doubt if I’ll ever move back into DC. Frankly speaking the prices for homes are too high for what little you get.

2. I attended Norfolk State University my first few years of college. Then I came home and attended Bowie State University. I also briefly attended Prince George’s Community College. And now I’m at the University of Maryland University College (UMUC). For the past two years or so, I’ve been taking only online classes. And I’m loving the flexibility.

3. My favorite flower is tulip. Actually I'm not much of a flower person, but my preference of flowers is the tulip. I also like lilies, orchids and iris. And probably would prefer them over roses as well.

4. My favorite color is blue. I also like green, orange, purple and brown. But if I had to choose one color to wear everyday it would be blue.

5. I am the oldest and only girl. My mother has me and my two brothers. And my father has me and my three brothers. (I have 2.5 brothers)

6. I am shy. Most people that know me don't and wouldn't believe this to be true but it is. If I were in a room of people I didn't know, guess where you'd find me? On the wall with a drink or some food.

7. I love to shop. What woman doesn't right. Every now and again I go over board, like Christmas. I try to start early and finish by the first week of December. But it never fails that the week before Christmas, I'm in the stores again buying items for my nieces or husband as if I don't have enough stuff for them already.

8. I'm a huge fan of R&B music. My favorite artist range from Pattie Labelle, Natalie Cole, Aretha Franklin to the likes of more modern day artist such as Anthony Hamilton, Chrisette Michelle, Brian McKnight and Mary J Blige.

9. I'm conservative when it comes to dressing. Although I'm a fan from afar of many of the current fashion trends, I wouldn't wear them. I prefer items that transcend time, like classic black pumps and black suits and A line skirts.

10. I’m a homebody. I like to go out and party, but for the most part, you can catch me at home curled up in bed watching tv or a movie.

11. I love the summertime. I get to dress flirty with my skirts and sandals. If I had to choose where to live, my preference would be someplace that’s hot all the time.

12. I love crabcakes. I could eat a good one every other day. Currently my favorite place to get them from is RedSky in Laurel, MD. If you are ever in PG County, stop thru. They have a crab salad that is really good.

13. I love the movie THE WIZ. I can watch it over and over and over and over again. My favorite character of the movie is the wicked witch Eviline played by Mabel King.
