"Fireproof" a movie review

A friend sent an e-mail earlier this week with a link to this movie entitled Fireproof. The trailer looked really good, so I told her and a few other friends that I would go see it this weekend.

So I just got back from seeing the movie. The movie starred Kirk Cameron, you might remember him from the popular 80's tv show Growing Pains. I must first admit that I'm abit torn on this movie. With the exception of Kirk Cameron, the acting was bad. The other characters seemed as if they had just remembered their lines and were reciting them. Oh, and they have these 2 African American women that the stereo typed that made me mad.......cause not all African American women are like that.

Aside from that the message was really good, I can't say that enough. Cameron gave a memorable performance as a husband fighting to get his marriage back on track. Along the way he seeks advice from a co-worker and his father.

It begins with Cameron coming home from a shift at the firehouse where he's the captain. I'm not sure how long their shifts are, but I'm thinking maybe 3 or 4 straight days then a day off. At any rate he comes home to a wife giving him the cold shoulder. They have a disagreement about nothing in particular and it escalates days later to the point of him yelling at her them declaring they want to dissolve the marriage.

Cameron's character then seeks advice from his father on what to do and how to proceed. His father suggests he give it 40 days and follow the instructions in this book he provides. Day one he is instructed to not say anything negative to his wife. Day two's instructions were to do something thoughtful, so he makes her a morning cup of coffee, for which his wife declares she has no time for. Day three is to send some flowers, followed by day four where he has to provide dinner by candlelight. Wifey comes in and shakes her head, goes to her room for a few, then comes back to tell him, "Let me make this clear, I don't love you."

I wont give the rest of the movie away. But I will advise two of my friends to see the movie, as they are in relationships and often have inquiries about being in a committed relationship and or marriage. I found the message to be very pertinent and relevant. And in the end aside from the bad acting, it was indeed a good movie that I would recommend others to see. (MATINEE).

Fwd: Interwoven...we all are

A mouse looked through the crack in the wall to see the farmer and his wife open a package.

What food might this contain? The mouse wondered. He was devastated to discover it was a mousetrap.

Retreating to the farm yard, the mouse proclaimed the warning : 'There is a mousetrap in the house! There is a mousetrap in the house!'

The chicken clucked and scratched, raised her head and said, 'Mr. Mouse, I can tell this is a grave concern to you, but it is of no consequence to me. I cannot be bothered by it.'

The mouse turned to the pig and told him, 'There is a mousetrap in the house! There is a mouse trap in the house!'The pig sympathized, but said, 'I am so very sorry, Mr. Mouse, but there is nothing I can do about it but pray. Be assured you are in my prayers.'

The mouse turned to the cow and said 'There is a mousetrap in the house! There is a mouse trap in the house!' The cow said, 'Wow, Mr. Mouse. I'm sorry for you, but it's no skin off my nose.'

So, the mouse returned to the house, head down and dejected, to face the farmer's mousetrap . . alone.

That very night a sound was heard throughout the house -- like the sound of a mousetrap catching its prey.

The farmer's wife rushed to see what was caught. In the darkness, she did not see it was a venomous snake whose tail the trap had caught.

The snake bit the farmer's wife. The farmer rushed her to the hospital, and she returned home with a fever. Everyone knows you treat a fever with fresh chicken soup, so the farmer took his hatchet to the farm yard for the soup's main ingredient.

But his wife's sickness continued, so friends and neighbors came to sit with her around the clock. To feed them, the farmer butchered the pig. The farmer's wife did not get well; she died. So many people came for her funeral, the farmer had the cow slaughtered to provide enough meat for all of them.

The mouse looked upon it all from his crack in the wall with great sadness.

So, the next time you hear someone is facing a problem and think it doesn't concern you, remember ---- when one of us is threatened, we are all at risk. We are all involved in this journey called life. We must keep an eye out for one another and make an extra effort to encourage one another.

SEND THIS TO EVERYONE WHO HAS EVER HELPED YOU OUT AND LET THEM KNOW HOW IMPORTANT THEY ARE. REMEMBER. . . . .EACH OF US IS A VITAL THREAD IN ANOTHER PERSON'S TAPESTRY;OUR LIVES ARE WOVEN TOGETHER FOR A REASON.

One of the best things to hold onto in this world is a FRIEND ! ! !

Thursday 13: 11th edition - Sidney Poitier

On weekends in the fall and winter months I'm usually in the house in the bed under my heated blanket. And this fall/winter will be no different. And as such, I'm looking to expand on my movie collection. I'm a real movie buff, but never really got into the older movies. So my first step in remedying that is to add some Sidney Poitier to my collection. He's had a very illustrious movie and tv career so there's so many options.

But here's my list of movies to pick up first:

  1. Porgy & Bess

  2. For Love of Ivy

  3. Uptown Saturday Night

  4. Let's Do it Again

  5. They Call Me Mr. Tibbs

  6. In the Heat of the Night

  7. A Raisin in the Sun

  8. Guess Who's Coming to Dinner

  9. To Sir With Love

  10. A Warm December

  11. A Piece of Action

  12. Brother John

  13. A Patch of Blue

I suspect I'll have some difficulty locating let alone purchasing some of these, but I'm adamant about adding them so I'll find them.

Target robbed me blind.....

I left work yesterday with intentions of running into Target for some personal items and some snacks for work. I decided I would challenge myself and draw up a list and see if I could stick to the items listed. Well let's just say that plan went so far array it's ridiculous.

I get in the store and grab a cart and stir clear of the women's clothing section. It's normally where I start my shopping. At any rate I head towards the personal items section and the black hair care aisle was calling me. So I had to oblige, and wouldn't you know it Neutrogena Triple Moisture products were on sale. I grab the hair mask and moved on to where I needed to go. I was a woman on a mission to not spend any more money than I needed to. I get to the section, grab what I needed, but there's a sale so I needed to make sure the items I selected were actually on sale.

Next stop was the household cleaning aisle, I wanted to pick up a couple of Glade candles. I then moved on the snack section where I grab a few items, checked prices and made final selections. Last stop was the grocery section. I needed to find something quick for dinner, and I had a taste for one of those Bertolli bag meals.

By the time I made it to the register and had my items rung up my total damage was 71.79....I have a serious love/hate relationship with Target. I have the hardest time running in grabbing what I need and leaving.

You think I have grounds for a lawsuit? LOL

And then I get home a guess what..........wait for it.............I needed to pick up some film from development! So now I have to go back again today. I'm gonna pull my hair out if I spend over $20.

Have a great day!

Fwd: 80/20

In most cases, especially in relationships, you will only get 80% of what you NEED and you will hardly get the other 20% that you WANT in your relationship. There is always another person (man or women) that you will meet and that will offer you the other 20% which is lacking in your relationship that you WANT

And believe me, 20% looks really good when you are not getting it at all in your current relationship.

But the problem is that you will always be tempted to leave that good80% that you know you have, thinking that you will get something better with the other 20% that you WANT

But as reality has proven, in most cases, you will always end up with having the 20% that you WANT and loosing the 80% that you really NEED and that you already had.

Be careful in deciding between what you WANT and NEED in your life.

Adultery happens when you start looking for what you don't have. 'Wow,this girl in my office is a real looker. But it's not her Wynona Rider features that got me. I'm crazy about her because she's also understanding, intelligent, tender - so many things that my spouse is not'

Somewhere along the way, you'll find a woman or a man who will be more charming or sensitive. More alluring. More thoughtful. Richer. Have greater sex appeal. And you will find a woman or man who will need you and pursue you and go loco over you more than your spouse ever did.

Because no wife or husband is perfect. Because a spouse will only have80% of what you're looking for. So adultery takes place when a husband or wife looks for the missing 20%. Let's say your wife is melancholic by nature.

You may find yourself drawn to the pretty clerk who has a cherry laugh no matter what she says: 'I broke my arm yesterday, Hahahaha . . ..'

Or because your wife is a homebody in slippers and pajamas, smelling of garlic and fish oil, you may fall for a fresh-smelling young sales representative that visits your office in a sharp black blazer, high heels, and a red pencil-cut skirt Or because your husband is the quiet type, your heart may skip a beat when you meet an old college flame who has the makings of a talk show host.

But wait! That's only 20% of what you don't have. Don't throw away the80% that you already have!

That's not all. Add to your spouse's 80% the 100% that represents all the years that you have been with each other. The storms you have weathered together. The unforgettable moments of sadness and joy as a couple. The many adjustments you have made to love the other. The wealth of memories that you've accumulated as lovers.

Adultery happens when you start looking for what you don't have. But faithfulness happens when you start thanking God for what you already have.

But I'm not just talking about marriage. I'm talking about life!About your jobs. About your friends. About your children. About your lifestyles.

Are you like the economy airline passenger that perennially peeks through the door of the first class cabin, obsessed with what he's missing? 'They have got more leg room! Oh my, their food is served in porcelain! Wow, their seats recline at an 80% angle and they've got personal videos!'

I guarantee you'll be miserable for the entire trip! Don't live your life like that. Forget about what the world says is first class. Do you know that there are many first class passengers who are miserable in first class -- because they are not riding in a private Lear Jet?

The main message??? If you start appreciating what you have right now, wherever you are, you are first class!

Have a beautiful life people and just remember that 20% can be obtained out of that 80% if you both work at it.........

Leftovers? No can do.......

Monday I left work in a hurry to make it to the grocery store to purchase the items I needed to make a recipe I found online. I wanted to be home by 7:30 - 8 and have get dinner started, so I can watch whatever I had programmed for that evening (can't readily recall at the moment).

At any rate that night's dish would be Easy Baked Ravioli. The cooking time took much longer than I thought because silly me used frozen ravioli. So instead of 30 minutes, it took more like an hour. But it was still rather tasty and mister liked it as well.

Last night I got home and proceeded to warm up some of the leftovers. I've never really liked leftover's and wasn't surprised that I only ate about three bites, ok I was hungry so more like 8 bites from the leftovers.

So tonight, I'm gonna try to make another dish. I'm not sure exactly what that dish will be, but I'm on the look out now for another easy recipe to try.

401k or not

Time is really flying. I just received the paperwork for 401k. Not sure if I previously mentioned, but I had to wait about four months before I could be eligible to participate in the 401k plan here. At any rate, in light of recent events I’m abit hesitant about completing the paperwork. Merrill Lynch is the administrator for my current employer’s retirement plans. And they’d since been purchased by BOA. Not too mention all the turmoil of our economy now. Maybe I’ll just sign up and put everything in guaranteed funding………that might work.

I’s got paperwork to complete folks!

Fwd: The Law of the Garbage Truck

One day I hopped in a taxi and we took off for the airport. We were driving in the right lane when suddenly a black car jumped out of a parking space right in front of us. My taxi driver slammed on his brakes, skidded, and missed the other car by just inches! The driver of the other car whipped his head around and started yelling at us. My taxi driver just smiled and waved at the guy. And I mean he was really friendly.

So I asked, 'Why did you just do that? This guy almost ruined your car and sent us to the hospital!' This is when my taxi driver taught me what I now call, 'The Law of the Garbage Truck.'

He explained that many people are like garbage trucks. They run around full of garbage, full of frustration, full of anger, and full of disappointment. As their garbage piles up, t hey need a place to dump it and sometimes they'll dump it on you . Don't take it personally. Just smile, wave, wish them well, and move on. Don't take their garbage and spread it to other people at work, at home, or on the streets.

The bottom line is that successful people do not let garbage trucks take over their day. Life's too short to wake up in the morning with regrets, so..... 'Love the people who treat you right. Pray for the ones who don't.'

Life is ten percent what you make it and ninety percent how you take it!

Afternoon chuckle

A woman was unhappy with the way her laundry was done at the local Chinese laundry, so she wrote a note and put it in the bag with the next collection of soiled clothes: 'USE MORE SOAP ON PANTIES!' She got the clean laundry back, and was still dissatisfied with the results, so the following week she enclosed another note: 'USE MORE SOAP ON PANTIES!'

The Chinese laundry man became very annoyed, and when her clean laundry was delivered, it contained a note from HIM:
'I USE PLENTY SOAP ON PANTY!!! YOU USE MORE PAPER ON ASS!!'

God's Cake

Sometimes we wonder, "What did I do to deserve this?" or "Why did God do this to me?"
Here is a wonderful explanation!

A daughter is telling her mother how everything is going wrong. She's failing algebra, her boyfriend broke up with her and her best friend is moving away.

Meanwhile, her Mother is baking a cake and asks her daughter if she would like a snack, and the daughter says, "Absolutely Mom, I love your cake".

"Here, have some cooking oil," her Mother offers. "Yuck" says her daughter.

"How about a couple of raw eggs?" "Gross, Mom!"

"Would you like some flour then? Or maybe baking soda?" "Mom, those are all yucky!"

To which the mother replies: "Yes, all those things seem bad by themselves. But when they are put together in the right way, they make a wonderfully delicious cake!"

God works the same way. Many times we wonder why He would let us go through such bad and difficult times. But God knows that when He puts these things in His order, they always work for good! We just have to trust Him and, eventually, they will make something wonderful!

God is crazy about you. He sends you flowers every spring and a sunrise every morning.

Whenever you want to talk, He'll listen. He can live anywhere in the universe, and He chose your heart.

Life may not be the party we hoped for, but while we are here we might as well dance.

Standing in Faith

Here's another little something sent to me that I'd like to share:

There are times when standing on faith is our only choice, trusting God and saying so with our voice.

There are times we aren't sure what exactly it is we see, our eyes look in the flesh not spiritually.

There are times the Doctors know not what is going on, that is the time to choose who we'll count on.

There are times when it seems the whole world is caving in; not good if your trust in God is thin.

Standing on faith is trusting God knows what to do, no matter how hurtful He'll get you through.

Knowing that He not we are still in charge, and He'll help us with our burden if it gets too large.

Sometimes there?s absolutely nothing to do but wait, and it isn't as hard if we're standing on faith!

A Lazy Sunday

I have a few things I'd like to do today, but I'm feeling like staying in the house all day. I'm watching Girlfriends season 2 now, I'll probably wash and dry a few loads of clothes and wash and style my hair.

Yesterday after my acupuncture appointment, I went to the mall for some impulse shopping. I got two pairs of pants and two shirts. Then I went in Target and got some more training pants for niece and a heating pad. So I think I faired pretty well, after all it could have been worse. My last errand was to the library where I got the copy of Secret Life of Bees. I joined the bloggers bookclub, so I'm all set. I also rented the movie Juno. Later on I made dinner for Mister and we watched a movie: Shattered.

Hope you are enjoying your weekend.
